A Letter From Haiti

We are thrilled to be hearing now from one of our dearest partners in Haiti – Linda Gershuny, a key staff member of CAFT. Linda has been living and working in Haiti for 34 years and has been able to connect with some of the administrators from other programs and schools Mona supports. In some recent emails, Linda has given us amazing insight into what is happening in Haiti during this time of great distress.

CAFT Program in Haiti Receives $40,000 Grant
June 2008
CAFT (Centre d'apprentissage et de Formation pour la Transformation) has received a 2008 grant from the Vista Hermosa Foundation for $40,000. This program is making educational training opportunities available to hundreds of Haitian teachers.

Mongolian Development Center Receives $18,000 Grant
The 2008 Grant for $18,000 from the Mona Foundation assists the programs which include: the Early Childhood Development Program which involves kindergarten teachers' training, parents' training and a character development curriculum for 3-5 year olds; the Junior Youth Empowerment Program, operated in state secondary schools, which aims to develop adolescents' moral capabilities and their power of positive expression; and the Community Capacity Development Program which includes the Community Banking Micro-finance Program and the Integrated Gardening Program for children and adults involved in the Early Childhood and Junior Youth programs.
Four Events in US Raise $80,000 for Barli Institute
Four events were held in the United States when Barli Institute Directors came to visit. A luncheon in Seattle, WA, dinner and silent auction in Los Angeles, CA. Rainn Wilson spoke at two events in Austin and Houston, Texas. $80,000 was raised for Barli Institute programs for women.

Dr. Flor Geola Visits ADCAM, Brazil
Dr. Flor Geola, Clinical Professor of Medicine at UCLA and long-time Mona supporter, recently spent a week at ADCAM in Brazil. She was truly impressed by the depth and scope of the project, which now serves over 3000 students daily from kindergarten through college level.

Eugene L. Lawler Award for Humanitarian Contributions within Computer Science and Informatics received in 2007 and 2008 Microsoft Education Award received!
Community Phone Connections are now establshed to link the teachers to each other.
