ONE-ROOM SCHOOLS, INDIA, educating 3,000 students.

GyanSetu one-room schools educate kids living in abject poverty in city slums and poor rural villages across six districts in Uttar Pradesh, India, bringing them up to grade level so they can transition into the public schools. These schools are centers of community transformation, educating mothers on topics like hygiene and child marriage, and connecting them with community services. The program has expanded to include digital literacy and computer skills to provide employment opportunities to young girls and their mothers.

Cost: $7 / month to educate a child.

MAIA IMPACT SCHOOL, GUATEMALA, educating 400 girls.

Guatemala has the worst gender-equality gap in the Western hemisphere, and Indigenous Maya girls are among the most marginalized on the planet. MAIA is Central America’s first female, Indigenous-led secondary school, serving 40 Maya villages in Solola where 75% live on less than $2/day. The school is specifically designed to empower Maya girls to blaze a new trajectory towards prosperity and equal opportunity. Their holistic program focuses equally on academics, girls' empowerment, culture and identity, and family engagement.

Cost: $14 per month per student.

NEW HORIZON, HAITI, educating 550 students.

In a country where almost 50% of the population deals with food insecurity, only 61% over age 10 can read and write, and only 29% of children attend secondary school, New Horizon is recognized as one of the best K-12 schools in Haiti for its innovative approach to education including focus on science, technology, environmental protection, fine arts, sports, moral education, and self-reliance and service. Its student graduation rate is 100% vs. 20% national average.
