July 9, 2024 - Congratulations to Phung Tran, current Sunflower Mission leader and former recipient of its Sponsor a Student (SAS) Scholarship Program, for winning Intel’s 2024 Gordon Moore Hero of the Year Award! The award recognizes Intel employees who display extraordinary commitment to their communities.
As a child, Phung Tran lived in a poor, remote village in Vietnam with little opportunities, especially for girls. Fortunately, Sunflower Mission built its
first elementary school
in her village in 2002. Phung enrolled as a 4th grader, receiving a scholarship that supported her education all the way through college.
She aimed high and achieved her goals. Determined to pursue a career in science, technology, and engineering (STEM), she attended the only engineering college in Vietnam, usually reserved for boys, the rich, and the well-connected.
Starting as an intern in 2015, Phung rose through the ranks at Intel Vietnam. Today, Phung is an engineering manager for Intel Vietnam and a Sunflower Mission leader using her experience to give back to the next generation of students.
We were delighted to meet Phung at Sunflower Mission's 20th Anniversary Gala in Houston in October 2022. Mona has been a proud supporter of Sunflower Mission since 2007, and was honored to be presented with a beautiful needlepoint masterpiece of sunflowers handmade by Phung (see photo below) in appreciation of our partnership. This very special gift now hangs in Mona's office in Bellevue, WA.
