Wuyatta, a 16-year-old girl from Yambama Village, Sierra Leone, joined Programme for Children, a Mona partner since 2019, with a dream to excel in her education and become a nurse. Coming from a family of six with a limited income, her parents struggled to provide school supplies and basic necessities. As the eldest child, Wuyatta, often helped her mother with farming, leaving little time for her studies. Since joining the program in 2023, Wuyatta has received school supplies, participated in Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) lessons, and benefited from improved teaching materials and resources provided to her school. The menstrual hygiene kits she received enabled her to attend school regularly, breaking the cycle of absenteeism caused by a lack of proper supplies.
Wuyatta’s performance has drastically improved. Once struggling to pass, she now consistently ranks among the top five in her class. She credits her success to the program’s support and her teacher Ensa, whose engaging teaching methods have made learning enjoyable and accessible. Wuyatta’s transformation has inspired her siblings and peers. Her younger brother has expressed a newfound interest in education, and her classmates often seek her help with their studies. Beyond academics, she has started leading community discussions with her peers about hygiene and reproductive health, fostering awareness and breaking stigmas in her village
Her family is overjoyed with her progress. Her mother shared,
“Wuyatta is not only helping herself but uplifting our family and others in the community. We are so proud of her achievements.’’
Wuyatta aspires to attend the Bo School of Nursing at Njala University after completing her secondary education. She dreams of returning to Yambama Village as a nurse, improving healthcare for her community.
