GyanSetu Digital Literacy Program Enables Women to Find Employment

GyanSetu centers are one-room schools operated by Study Hall Educational Foundation in Lucknow, India to provide primary and early childhood education to marginalized children in city slums and poor rural villages and prepare them to transition to the public schools. The schools also provide critical training for mothers on health and hygiene, domestic violence, child marriage, and alcoholism and connects them to available community services.

In the past year, the schools have expanded their services to include digital literacy and computer skills to provide employment opportunities to young girls and their mothers. The students pictured above  completed the GyanSetu Digital Literacy program at the Sahilamau center and four are now working at schools at Malihabad:  3 as teachers and 1 as office staff. Digital Literacy is an added advantage for GyanSetu students as well as community members like these young women, equipping them with knowledge and skills required to find good jobs.

DIGITAL LITERACY PROGRAM HELPS MOTHER FIND EMPLOYMENT

Sudha is a mother of 3 children attending the GyanSetu school in the village of Nabipanah near Lucknow, India. For the last two years she has been working as a member of a self-help group for women in the village called Sakhi. She was interested in getting a job at the bank but without computer skills was hesitant to pursue this. To overcome this challenge and get better employment, the GyanSetu teacher encouraged Sudha to enroll in their Digital Literacy program. Now she has completed her computer course and works for the bank as its Sakhi representative.
