Meena's Story: Her dream to be a lawyer comes true

Meena graduated from Prerna Girls School in 2014. She recently completed her Bachelor of Law degree from the University of Lucknow and is now pursuing her Master’s in Law at the University of Lucknow. Meena’s father could not study or go to school because he is a dalit (a member of the lowest caste in India). He was often beaten up by other children in the school. Because of this, Meena says that her father is vicariously living his dream through her and is very proud of her achievements. In his youth, her father was falsely convicted and imprisoned because he did not have access to a lawyer to argue his case. This story is part of Meena’s inspiration to become a lawyer.

At the convocation in August, she shared her experience with the audience. “Looking back at my life, where I came from, how my life has been, and how it has now changed, I am deeply grateful to my teachers, who motivate me and every girl at Prerna to do better. The teachers welcome every girl at Prerna along with the problems that girls face in their life. They help each girl to solve these problems. My teachers encouraged me and helped me with the challenges I had to face. The education that Prerna gave me empowered me to fight my battles on my own and become the person I am today.”
